The ARTech Building (Completed 2002)
Evocative of the works of Louis Sullivan, the neo-classical ARTech Building combines traditional styling with some whimsical flourishes, which include a 6 foot copper salamander scaling the side of the building. Situated at the corner of Berkeley's Arts District - the home of the Berkeley Rep., The Aurora Theater, and the Berkeley Jazz School - the ARTech building combines a mixture of uses that includes a ground floor café, second floor offices, and three floors of apartments.
Location
The ARTech Building is to be found at 2002 Addison St, between Milvia and Shattuck Ave., near the UC Berkeley campus (3 blocks), close to mass transit (BART, 1 block) and within easy walking distance of all the movie houses, restaurants, and institutions of downtown Berkeley. Within a five minute walk are: The Berkeley YMCA, City Hall, the Saturday Farmers Market, and several restaurants and cafes, one of which is open till 3 AM every night (Au Cocolet at the corner of University and Milvia).
The Apartments
The building contains 1- and 2-bedroom units, all of which face either north or west. All the apartments open to an outdoor walkway, allowing light and air into the apartments from at least two directions. Soundproofing materials were added to the original specifications for the floors and walls.
Extras
All the apartments have gas stoves, refrigerators, microwaves and come with kitchen tables and chairs, which remain with the apartments. There are high-speed internet access outlets (T-1) in the kitchen areas and in the bedrooms of each unit. Elfa shelving storage units are also included as part of the furnishings. The apartments all have access to a 2,500 s.f. roof deck, with views of San Francisco and the Berkeley Hills.
Security and Safety
As one of the more recent additions to the downtown, The ARTech Building is built to the 1999 seismic and fire safety standards, and comes with fire sprinklers in every room and a direct fire alarm system to the Berkeley Fire Department. A closed circuit TV recorder is installed in the lobby, allowing residents to see who is at the entry, and recording all entrances and exits of the people coming into the building.
